Cromwell is one of the great narrators
I teach this to sixteen-year-olds and they argue about Thomas More for weeks. Mantel keeps the politics at the edge of the frame until suddenly it is the frame. The present tense takes fifty pages to settle and then you cannot read the period any other way.
